What is a parent cooperative preschool?
Parents are the first and most important teachers to their children. A parent cooperative (or co-op) empowers parents to fully participate in their children's education starting at a very early age. Families join with a facilitator to enrich childhood development and self-esteem through a variety of learning experiences, and to enhance the parenting experience by furthering personal growth, strengthening parenting skills, and providing parental support.

At the Spokane Valley Parent Co-op Preschool your child will have many opportunities to try new activities, develop independence and pre-academic concepts and skills, make new friends, learn to share, listen and follow directions and group routines, enjoy themselves, and learn that school is fun!

As a parent, you will have the opportunity to be an active partner in your child's first learning experience, enhance your parenting skills, learn about child development, share ideas, interests and resources with other parents, make new family friendships, and use and develop leadership skills by helping to run a non-profit business.

Participation in the Spokane Valley Parent Co-op Preschool requires the following committments.

  • Participation in the classroom at least once a week.
  • Attendance at a monthly business meeting and parent education seminar.
  • Willingness to serve in the co-op in some capacity (e.g., field trip coordinator, classroom cleaning, party committee, etc).

College Affiliation
The Spokane Valley Parent Co-op Preschool program is established as an Adult Continuing Education Class of the Community Colleges of Spokane Institute for Extended Learning. As a member of the co-op, you enroll as a community college student taking a non-graded Parent Education class. Being affiliated with the collge allows the co-op to access state higher-education vocational funds to pay the Facilitator's contract, purchase liability and child accident insurance at a much reduced rate, as well as tap into the educational resources of the college.
